BP

In my role within bp’s Digital Design team, I contributed to humanizing digital innovation by designing engaging, intuitive, and impactful digital experiences across global operations. Through rotations across multiple design disciplines, I supported the creation and improvement of branding, digital products, content, and research insights that enhance user experience, safety, and sustainability.

I shaped UX/UI for digital solutions, developed high-quality content and visual assets, and conducted user research to inform and guide design decisions. Working alongside one of the world’s largest technology organizations, I helped ensure that bp’s digital products and services were user-centered, cohesive, and strategically aligned.

Background: BP partnered with Tech Circus for Product Design Week London 2023 (PDW23) and related events, including sessions such as “Business X Design” and the UX Writing Conference. The collaboration highlighted BP’s commitment to digital and design innovation within the energy sector, with speakers sharing insights on the future of tech in the industry during October and November 2023. The theme for the event was “liquid metal.”

For PDW23, I contributed in several ways:

  • Virtual booth: Collaborated with fellow designer Jay Wong to create a virtual booth used to engage with other companies and designers seeking opportunities.

  • Physical booth: Independently designed the physical booth, which was produced and housed in London (I wished I could have seen it in person!).

  • Presentation development: Worked with Mark Howell, Senior Lead of Service Design at BP, to develop his presentation focused on service design.

  • Presentation style guide: Created a 63-slide deck that can be mixed and matched to serve as a foundation for any presentation, supporting other leads and presenters from BP.

  • Brand integration: Merged BP’s brand identity with the various products requested by Tech Circus for the event.

As an early-career professional with a strong gift for networking, I was personally requested by the Senior Vice President of Engineering Business, and the former Executive Vice President of Digital Technology, to create assets for a FREng event in London for prestigious women engineers. FREng stands for Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a prestigious honor awarded to engineers recognized for outstanding contributions to engineering, leadership, and innovation in the UK. The event celebrated their accomplishments and highlighted leadership, innovation, and the future of engineering.

For the FREng event, I contributed in several ways:

  • Invitation design: Created the official event invitation for attendees, ensuring a professional and welcoming presentation.

  • Presentation design: Developed a polished presentation aligned with the event’s theme and objectives.

  • Directional screens: Designed multiple screens to help guide and inform attendees throughout the event.

  • Podium design: Contributed to the design of the podium, ensuring it was functional, visually aligned with the event’s branding, and supported the speakers’ presentations.

Kaskida: BP’s sixth operated hub, Kaskida, is located in the US Gulf of Mexico and is projected to come online soon. The platform is expected to produce 80,000 barrels of oil per day and unlock approximately 10 billion barrels of discovered resources in the Gulf of Mexico Paleogene. This project represents BP’s strategic commitment to grow production in a high-margin basin and maximize long-term value through a simplified, standardized, and cost-efficient design.

Tiber-Guadalupe: The Tiber-Guadalupe project, also in the US Gulf of Mexico, is expected to start production between 2028–2030, with a production capacity of 80,000 barrels of oil per day and access to roughly 10 billion barrels of discovered resources. Fully owned by BP, this project strengthens BP’s upstream portfolio, grows value in the Gulf of Mexico, and leverages a cost-efficient design for long-term scalability.

Design Contributions:

  • Logo design – Kaskida: Collaborated with Jay Wong as lead designer, focusing on typography to create a distinctive wordmark while Jay focused on imagery.

  • Logo design – Tiber-Guadalupe: Provided typographic support, carrying the Kaskida identity forward while Jay focused on imagery.

  • Asset application: Logos applied across digital and physical assets, including documents, websites, apparel, mugs, and team/crew gear, ensuring consistent brand identity.

I worked closely with BP’s Business Resource Groups (BRGs), established to support the company’s diverse employee population. I was involved with Black Collective, focused on elevating Black voices toward equity in the workforce and community, and heavily involved in bpIndigenous, which celebrates and educates employees about Indigenous cultures, values, and traditions.

As an early-career professional—just one year into my role—I was selected as local co-president of bpIndigenous alongside Sarah Townsend. In this role, we focused on education, advocacy, and raising awareness across the company. One major initiative we championed is Orange Shirt Day, observed annually on September 30th in Canada. The day honors Indigenous children lost in the residential school system, symbolizing the loss of identity and culture, inspired by Phyllis Jack Webstad’s story of her orange shirt being taken on her first day of residential school. We recognized this day within BP, educating employees about the history, ongoing consequences for Indigenous communities, and the broader impact of the oil and gas industry on them.

Design Contributions:

  • Communications design: Created digital and printed flyers, presentations, videos, invitations, and thank-you cards for various BRG events.

  • Event support: Developed materials that elevated the visibility and impact of initiatives such as Orange Shirt Day, supporting both education and engagement across the company.

  • Branding consistency: Ensured all materials aligned with BP’s visual identity while reflecting the unique mission and voice of each BRG.

Professional Growth – Public Speaking and Event Exposure:

  • Gained opportunities to practice public speaking and present in front of live audiences and on camera, building confidence and professional visibility.

  • Learned to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, adapting messaging to different groups within the company and externally.

  • Explored behind-the-scenes event operations, observing and learning from tech teams how seamless events and programs are executed.

  • Developed an appreciation for event production and technical setups, enhancing my understanding of how design, presentation, and logistics come together to create impactful experiences.

Confidential Digital Work:
Due to confidentiality and respect for BP’s proprietary information, I’m unable to showcase live digital work such as websites and applications. However, below is a selection of internal and customer-facing digital interfaces I designed or contributed to during my time at BP:

  • CyberBarometer (Digital Security Platform):
Designed interfaces for BP’s digital security initiative focused on helping employees protect both personal and company credentials. I revitalized the Cyber Safety program through interactive interfaces and digital badge icons, using gamification to drive engagement. The CyberBarometer initiative reached approximately 87,000 global employees monthly, reinforcing secure digital practices across the organization.

  • Intelligent Workflow Automation Chatbot:
Designed an interface for an internal chatbot supporting intelligent workflow automation, helping teams streamline processes, reduce manual effort, and improve operational efficiency.

  • Technical Program Assessment (TPM):
Designed a self-service assessment tool to help Technical Program Managers identify areas for improvement, career growth, and professional progression. I also revamped the TPM SharePoint site, improving usability, clarity, and access to resources.

  • Cloud Computing Services Newsletter:
Designed a recurring internal newsletter to keep cloud computing teams informed about initiatives across the discipline. The newsletter documented performance metrics tied to KPIs and OKRs, using reports coming directly from leadership, and translated them into a clear, accessible format for teams.

  • Power BI Data Visualizations:
Designed Power BI dashboards and charts for multiple business units, translating complex data into clear, actionable visual insights to support decision-making.

  • AMPM/BPme App:
Contributed to design work on the AMPM/BPme mobile app, supporting customer-facing digital experiences while aligning with BP’s brand and usability standards.

  • OneDigital – Service Design Exploration

OneDigital marked my first deeper venture into service design. I was hand-picked by the current Executive Vice President for the Technology discipline, and served as the sole designer on the initiative. I partnered closely with three senior leaders—Tom Inglis, Vice President of Cloud Computing Services, James Blair, and John Foster—collaborating at a strategic level throughout the project.

While I’m unable to share detailed specifics due to confidentiality, the work was inspired by a desire to improve how early-career professionals experience growth, support, and visibility within a large organization. Using UX research and design thinking methodologies, I focused on uncovering participant needs, identifying gaps in the existing program, and designing people-centered improvements that extended beyond individual touchpoints.

The outcome led to program improvements for 308 early-career professionals, which leadership later adopted and scaled to support 900+ participants across 47 specialized disciplines. This experience expanded my perspective on design beyond interfaces, demonstrating how service design can meaningfully influence systems, programs, and organizational culture at scale.

If you were wondering yes, I designed this sign haha.
